Join the Diesel University Campus for the college-inspired summer 2009 collection: class in every sense of the word
SPOTTED! Diesel girls and guys mixing it up in collegiate clothing that blends US preppy styles with undiluted rock and roll. After hours, it's picnic time on the beach before casually glamorous outfits are thrown on for a cocktail party to be remembered.
The Diesel Creative Team, headed by Creative Director Wilbert Das, goes back to college with fresh shapes and modern fabrics. The women's collection treads the line from school to pool. They're pairing shorts with smart tops, often off one shoulder and vivid with bold prints. Slinky shifts and shirt-dresses show a casual yet feminine approach, aided by ironic bows and hair-bands. A 50s schoolgirl look results in flared skirts worn with bobby socks and satin bowling jackets. But cocktail dresses with strong graphics indicate a burgeoning sophistication.
For men, varsity sportswear inspires loose T-shirts, bold graphics, big letters, braces worn with baggy gym pants and V-neck knitwear. A smarter mood as the sun goes down provokes 50s-inspired check shirts, snappy trilbies and skinny ties. Animal and floral prints add nonconformist flair. And of course, college classics like sweats and loose blazers are ever present.
The overall colour palette mixes sun-faded pastels with ice-cream hues: soft blues, mint greens, pale yellows, shades of white, brown and lilac. Washed out colours sit against bright, creating an appealing contrast of old and new. And the 50s return in geometric graphic patterns.
As you'd expect from Diesel, denim plays a strong role, with styles that stretch from classic American work wear to the slouchy rebellion of the Mississippi Tomboys. Tones are often light and sun-faded. Women can choose from loose chambray shirts, belted dresses, flirty slit skirts or short jumpsuits ' as well as form-fitting jeans. Treatments play a special role: from mid-blue bleached vintage denim to more destroyed, dirty effects. With this collection, Diesel has deconstructed the uniform to offer a lesson in individuality.
