NYFW - Simkhai's Autumn/Winter 2023/24 Collection: A Rooted and Connected Revolution in Fashion

Jonathan Simkhai has won the hearts of women worldwide with his innovative designs and strong personality. Since 2010, he has been leading his brand, drawing inspiration from architects and sculptors while embracing the softness and fluidity of fabrics. His unique style has driven the company’s recent global growth, culminating in a comprehensive rebranding.

The brand’s new logo, which removes the name “Jonathan” for easier recall and to emphasize the importance of teamwork, has been adorned with crystals on the three final looks of the Autumn/Winter 2023 fashion show. This show represented a “break” from Simkhai’s previous work, while maintaining the softness and fluidity of fabrics that characterize his style.

In his Autumn/Winter 2023 fashion show, Jonathan Simkhai chose to reflect on the troubles afflicting the world, including terrible wars and natural disasters, presenting a tough and defined vision even in style. This central theme was reflected in the collection’s garments that walked down the runway.

In the show, Simkhai chose deconstruction as the central theme, shaping a rooted and connected collection. The lightness and softness of fabrics remained, but were paired with sturdy shoes and decisive cuts. The reassuring jacket paved the way for the collection’s “revolution,” opting for timeless pieces designed to last. The recent collaboration with Wolford fits into this aesthetic, combining softness and tailoring, and his ingenuity in trench coats is well known.

Simkhai is no stranger to using lace, a connection to his family dating back to his grandfather’s management of a lace factory before the exile of the Shah of Iran. This legacy has always been significant in Simkhai’s work and is now prominent in various creations in the collection. The decorative motifs follow the lines of crystals evoked by the artist George Harvey, also present as prints in the collection.

The show demonstrated that Simkhai is capable of experimenting even with the rawest and most unrefined aspects of design, while maintaining the softness and fluidity of fabrics. Attention to detail is a constant in this collection, as demonstrated by the crystal decorations on the garments. The show offered the audience a sophisticated and surprising vision of contemporary fashion, once again demonstrating Jonathan Simkhai’s mastery of his craft.
